Nosework Diary: Practice – October 25, 2010

So for once, I have really gotten into having Dax practice some hides. So after his agility class, I took out my magic case of odor and placed a few hides in my bedroom:

Hide #1: On the floor, between the wall and toy basket

Hide #2: Elevated on bed frame at nose height

Hide #3: On floor, inside of bed leg

Hide #4

Hide #5

Hide #6

Hide #7

Hide #8

It was so interesting how much different Dax acts at home versus in class. He seemed much more demanding with the treats and more obvious when he find the odor. When he found the odor, he would nose touch the tin over and over, like he was demanding more treats and I could almost hear his thoughts saying “Its right here! The smell is coming from right here! Where is my hot dog??” And if I didn’t get the treat to him fast enough he would go back to nose touching the tin again with that same intensity. I kinda felt like if I didn’t pull the tin then he would have stayed there all night, but I didn’t want to test my theory and ruin all that lovely foundation work Michele had taught us.

I still don’t know if I am making the hides too easy or if he is just an all-star, but he found all the hides, with the exception of Hide #5 due to its higher elevation, in no time. (He did find Hide #5, it just took him an extra minute compared to the other hides.) Right now I am not worried about having his hides be unpaired, but I do want him to be challenged with his hides. Hopefully I’ll be inspired for new hide locations or learn more in class. I really want the “rain rain go away, come again another day” so we can practice outside again! Maybe get back to vehicle searches… ;-)

  1. Kenzo_HW says:

That he doesn’t think the treat is coming soon enough, is a very good. Dax knows he has to “mark” the object very clear. Just prolong it as much as you can, youu will see his markings improve even more

  2. As soon as I discovered this website I went on reddit to share some of the love with them.
